Report Raises Questions Over Drone Alert Triggered Security Measures in Finland

(MENAFN) A media report has claimed that a major security alert issued in Finland last month was prompted by a warning from Ukraine regarding drones carrying explosives that had allegedly been sent toward Finnish territory by mistake.

According to the report, the incident occurred on May 15 and led authorities to activate extensive security measures across the southern Finnish region of Uusimaa, where the capital, Helsinki, is located. The alert affected roughly 1.8 million residents, disrupted operations at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and resulted in emergency restrictions imposed by local authorities.

At the time, Finnish officials revealed only limited details, stating that drones might be approaching from the direction of Russia. This led many observers to assume the potential threat was connected to Moscow.

However, according to sources cited in the report, Finnish authorities had actually received a notification from Ukraine indicating that explosive-equipped drones had unintentionally been launched toward Finland, prompting the emergency response.

Subsequently, the Finnish Defense Forces stated that no unauthorized entry into Finnish airspace had been detected. Reports noted that the ultimate fate of the drones remains uncertain, with one possibility being that they were intercepted before reaching their intended path.

The revelations have reportedly generated criticism among some Finnish lawmakers. Members of the country's Foreign Affairs Committee argued that the source of the warning was a crucial piece of information and should have been disclosed to decision-makers immediately.

The incident has fueled debate over government transparency and crisis communication procedures, particularly regarding how security threats are presented to both officials and the public during periods of heightened regional tensions.

No independent confirmation of the report's claims was immediately available, and questions remain regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged drone launch and the reasons the aircraft never reached Finnish territory.
