Starmer warns Trump against tariffs on allies over Greenland

(MENAFN) Sir Keir Starmer told US President Donald Trump in a phone call on Sunday that imposing tariffs on allies opposing a US takeover of Greenland would be "wrong," according to a statement from No 10.

The conversation marks the first direct discussion between the two leaders since Trump threatened a 10% levy on goods from eight European countries, including the UK, until a deal over US acquisition of Greenland is reached. The White House has emphasized the strategic importance of the island for national security, causing concern among European allies and Greenland residents.

Starmer reiterated that the future of Greenland should be decided by its people and Denmark, saying that "security in the high north is a priority for all Nato allies in order to protect Euro-Atlantic interests." He added that applying tariffs on allies acting to safeguard collective Nato security is “wrong.”

Prior to the call with Trump, the UK prime minister spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Denmark maintains that Greenland is not for sale and has warned that any attack on its territory could threaten the integrity of the Nato alliance. Greenland has expressed a preference to remain under Danish governance rather than come under US control.

The eight nations named in Trump’s tariff plan—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK—issued a joint statement condemning the threat, saying the levies "undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral."

They affirmed their full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland and reaffirmed their commitment to Arctic security.
